Candlestick Motel

This week's photos are from the the smaller roads, businesses & attractions that didn't quite make the shift to the interstate highway culture. Today, the Candlestick Motel in Rutland, Vermont. Not open, but on the main drag & still in great shape.

Donna, I saw your "Slanted Light" photo of the Candlestick Motel while gathering genealogy information. My "Aunt Pearl" and "Uncle Bill" Sargent owned the Candlestick for a number of years. My siblings and I always called them Aunt and Uncle as a sign of respect, however they were no relation. Pearl's family and my mother's family were friends during the time my mother was growing up in Utica, NY. I very much like your picture, but I am reminded of the wonderful times I had at the Candlestick. It was alive with flowers and bushes surrounding the motel and cottages, people coming and going, animals romping, and of course all the traffic going by in vehicles and on foot. The old Rutland Swimming Pool was across the road from the Motel, and squeals of laughter and splashing water could be heard on warm days. One of my mother's first crushes occurred there while she visited Rutland. Mom eventually moved to Vermont where she met my father, and raised a family of eight children. As I mentioned, I was very fortunate to have been a small part of that piece of history. Thank you for the memories your photo invoked.

Sincerely
Shelley Martel
