Fuggerei

The Fuggerei is known as “the oldest social settlement in the world” - founded in 1521 by a leading Augsburger for needy citizens. The compound has 140 apartments, and once had its own church, school and hospital. Then, as now, the annual rent was “one Rhine guilder” (a little bit more than $1.00) and three daily prayers for the founder. The downside is that residents have to put up with people like me wandering around in their courtyards.
